Warner Bros. Animation is developing a new animated movie based on the iconic Cartoon Network series, The Powerpuff Girls. This project would be the second feature film adaptation of the original show, which first premiered in 1998.
Details regarding the plot, release date, or casting for the new movie remain scarce, as the project is in its early stages. Reports indicate that Warner Bros. is still in the process of securing the rights for the film, and no official deals are in place yet.
The original Powerpuff Girls series followed Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they protected the city of Townsville from various villains, including Mojo Jojo and Him. The show concluded its initial run between 2004 and 2005. A theatrical film, also titled The Powerpuff Girls, was released in 2002. Despite a modest global box office of $16.42 million, the film has since been looked upon favorably by fans.
Subsequent attempts to revive the franchise have met with mixed results. A reboot series premiered in 2016 but concluded after three seasons in 2019. More recently, a live-action adaptation was in development at The CW, with planned casting and pilot reshoots. However, this live-action project was ultimately canceled in 2023. This new animated movie would represent a return to the franchise's animated origins.
