The upcoming anime series, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All, also known as Green Yuri, will feature the Nirvana song "Breed" as its opening theme. Japanese animation studio CloverWorks revealed the news during Anime Expo 2026, along with a new teaser trailer for the series. The anime, an adaptation of Sumiko Arai's viral X/Twitter manga, is scheduled to premiere in January 2027.
Nirvana's drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl commented on the song's inclusion, expressing his belief that Kurt Cobain would have approved. In an interview with Arai, Grohl stated, "I think that Kurt definitely would have loved this." He elaborated, noting that the anime's "message, aesthetic, and the vibe" felt akin to Nirvana's own artistic direction. Grohl also reacted positively to a preliminary list of other songs CloverWorks plans to feature, calling some of the tracks "amazing" and "killer."
An official playlist for Green Yuri reportedly includes songs from artists such as Soundgarden, Radiohead, Korn, and Rage Against the Machine, suggesting a soundtrack with significant alternative and rock music influence. Manga author Sumiko Arai shared her enthusiasm for the adaptation, particularly CloverWorks' dedication to showcasing the music the characters enjoy. "While I'm constantly astonished at every bit of work they've done so far, I'm especially touched by their dedication to highlighting the bands and music the characters adore," Arai said.
The series follows Aya, a fashionable high schooler who discovers her musical tastes align with a stylish employee at a CD shop. This employee, Mitsuki, is secretly Aya's classmate who has been keeping her true identity hidden. The official description notes Mitsuki's awareness of Aya's feelings and her growing apprehension about revealing the truth, despite their increasing interactions.
Masashi Ishihama is directing Green Yuri, with Rino Yamasaki handling series composition and Kanna Hirayama on character design. Mariya Ise will voice Mitsuki Koga, and Akari Kito will portray Aya Osawa. CloverWorks, known for its work on projects like Black Butler and Spy x Family, is producing the animation.
