Peacock has announced a second season for its horror-comedy series "The 'Burbs," a television adaptation of the 1989 film that originally starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. The renewal comes just weeks after the series' debut on February 8, 2026.
A Modern Suburban Mystery
The series, produced by Imagine Entertainment and Universal Content Productions, reimagines the premise of the original film for a contemporary audience. Celeste Hughey, known for her work on "Dead Like Me," serves as showrunner and executive producer. The story follows Keke Palmer as Samira Fisher, a Black woman who moves to a suburban neighborhood with her husband and newborn baby. Initially finding her mostly white neighbors unwelcoming, the dynamic shifts with the arrival of a peculiar new resident, Gary, played by Justin Kirk. This shared suspicion compels the neighbors to investigate, leading them to uncover unsettling truths.
Critical and Audience Acclaim
Liza Katz, president of scripted content at NBC and Peacock, confirmed the renewal, citing the show's significant audience engagement. According to Peacock, "The 'Burbs" has accumulated 1.7 billion minutes of viewership since its premiere, placing it among Nielsen's top 10 streaming original seasons for four consecutive weeks. Katz praised the creative team for updating the beloved film into something "funny, warm, and highly contemporary."
Showrunner Celeste Hughey expressed her intention for Keke Palmer to continue as the protagonist in the second season, drawing a parallel between Palmer's on-screen charisma and Tom Hanks' performance in the original movie. "To me, she's the essence of Tom Hanks: charismatic, funny, dramatic, all of the things that we love about him," Hughey stated.
Future of "The 'Burbs"
While an official release date for "The 'Burbs" season 2 has not yet been announced, production for the first season began in March 2025 and concluded in August of the same year. Based on these timelines, a late 2027 debut for the second season is a possibility. The eight-episode first season is currently available for streaming on Peacock.
