Production on the third season of HBO's The Last of Us is taking a temporary hiatus, with filming in Vancouver pausing for approximately one month due to disruptions related to the FIFA World Cup. The major tournament's final is scheduled for July 19, and its presence has impacted local filming schedules. While the exact resumption date remains unclear, the season is anticipated to continue filming through the end of 2026, with a projected release in 2027. This upcoming season may also be the series' final installment.

Joining the cast is veteran actor Peter Sarsgaard, who will portray Amon, a prominent leader within the Seraphite faction. Amon is a character created specifically for the television adaptation and is slated to be a recurring role. This is not the first instance of the show introducing characters not present in the original video games; the first season featured Melanie Lynskey as Kathleen, a revolutionary leader, and Murray Bartlett as Frank, a character who was deceased by the time of his appearance in the games.

Sarsgaard brings extensive experience to the role, with over 70 acting credits across film and television. His filmography includes notable roles in "Garden State," "Jarhead," "Black Mass," "The Batman," and "Green Lantern." His television work, including "Dopesick" and "Presumed Innocent," has earned him Emmy nominations.

For the third season, Craig Mazin is serving as the sole showrunner, following Neil Druckmann's departure from that role. The narrative is expected to center on Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, with Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, also appearing. Ramsey has indicated a desire to take on different types of roles after concluding their work on "The Last of Us."
