PlayStation 5 owners in the U.S. can now access a new feature offering free, ad-supported live television channels directly through their console. This functionality, announced by Sony, requires a PlayStation account and is accessible via the console's media tab under "Live TV on PS5."

While the service is technically free, the PlayStation account used is linked to a Sony Core Pictures account, which is also used for digital movie and TV show purchases and rentals on the platform. The interface mimics traditional cable TV guides, displaying schedules and offering personalized recommendations. The content includes free movies from channels like MovieSphere and Sony One Horror Hits, dedicated shows such as "Community," "The Walking Dead," and "Naruto," limited sports programming, and local news and weather from NBC and Fox. This selection is comparable to other free ad-supported television (FAST) services.

Beyond Sony's native offering, PS5 users have access to other robust free streaming applications that must be downloaded separately. Pluto TV, part of Paramount, provides over 400 channels featuring movies and shows, including the "John Wick" franchise, "Top Gun: Maverick," and "Star Trek" series, alongside local CBS news. Tubi, acquired by Fox, offers a diverse library including classic cartoons and anime, with titles like "Kung Fu Panda," "Men in Black," and "Jurassic World" movies. Tubi also provides live TV options, including sports and local news under the Fox banner.

Additionally, YouTube and Twitch remain available on the PS5, offering a vast amount of free content supported by advertisements. These platforms provide extensive entertainment libraries beyond traditional movies and TV shows.
