Project Hail Mary, the cinematic adaptation of Andy Weir's 2021 science fiction novel, is set to arrive on Amazon Prime Video this Friday, July 3. The film, which has enjoyed a successful theatrical run since its March 20 release, is already available for streaming on MGM Plus as of June 18. The announcement of its Prime Video debut was made by Amazon MGM, the production company behind the movie.
A clip from the film, titled "Having A Moment," has been shared on the official Prime Video YouTube channel. While the scene offers an emotional glimpse into the movie's narrative, new viewers might consider avoiding it to preserve the full experience upon watching.
The movie has achieved significant financial and critical success, currently ranking third in both worldwide and domestic box office charts for the year. Reviewers have largely praised the adaptation, with one assessment calling it "everything fans of the book could want — and it’s a whole lot of fun for everyone else, too." Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with Ryan Gosling's central performance, have received particular commendation. The intricate puppetry work for the alien character Rocky has also been highlighted for its quality.
Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher portrayed by Gosling, who is tasked with saving Earth as the sole survivor of a space mission. During his journey, he encounters Rocky, an alien life form also on a mission to protect his own planet from a shared existential threat.
Prior to its streaming availability, Project Hail Mary was released for digital rental and purchase on May 12. Physical media releases, including Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions, are slated for August 11, with pre-orders now open. A special SteelBook edition, featuring additional content and collectibles, is scheduled for release on October 13. These physical versions will include five deleted scenes, commentary from directors Lord and Miller, and a featurette titled "Earth's Favorite Eridian."
