Director Zach Cregger has stated that his upcoming Resident Evil film will be the most violent project he has ever undertaken. Known for his work on horror films such as "Weapons" and "Barbarian," Cregger told Empire that the new movie "is definitely the most violent" thing he has created, emphasizing a need to "go grotesque" and "all the way" with its brutality. He described the film as "gnarly. It's brutal. A very bloody affair."
While Cregger's past work, including sketches from his time with "Whitest Kids U' Know," has featured violent content, such as a sketch depicting a character being shot through the eye or another involving a recent beheading, he clarified that his approach to the Resident Evil movie was not focused on expanding the established lore or deeply explaining the T-virus. "This movie is about one dude's journey on foot, fighting monsters," Cregger explained. "I don't give a f**k about checking boxes. All I cared about was just telling a fun story. [One in which] we step on the gas at about eight minutes in and never take our foot off the floor."
The Resident Evil movie is slated for release on September 18. It follows Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier dispatched to Raccoon City. During filming, Abrams narrowly avoided serious injury when a 150-pound blood bag malfunctioned during a scene that was ultimately included in the final cut. This film enters a franchise that continues to see success, with Capcom recently announcing that the latest game entry, "Resident Evil Requiem," has sold over 8 million units.
