Rupert Grint, widely known for his portrayal of Ron Weasley in the "Harry Potter" film series, is set to return to the stage as the beloved character in "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" on Broadway. Grint will begin his limited 17-week run on February 2, 2027, and conclude on May 30, 2027.
This marks Grint's return to a role he first inhabited at the age of 11. "Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life," Grint stated. "There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting."
Grint is the second major film actor from the "Harry Potter" franchise to join the Broadway production, following Tom Felton, who reprised his role as Draco Malfoy. Felton's extended engagement in the play concludes on January 3, 2027, meaning his time on stage will not overlap with Grint's.
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is a stage play set years after the original book series, focusing on the lives of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley's children as they attend Hogwarts. Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender remarked that Grint's involvement is more than just a reprise of a past role. "He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End," they said in a statement. "His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward."
While best recognized for his role as Ron Weasley, Grint has maintained an active career in television and film. His recent projects include the Apple TV+ horror series "Servant," the M. Night Shyamalan film "Knock at the Cabin," and the upcoming "Ebenezer," where he plays Bob Cratchit.
The news of Grint's casting comes as HBO is developing a television series reboot of "Harry Potter," which is slated to launch this Christmas and adapt the book series over approximately ten years. A new generation of actors will portray Harry, Ron, and Draco in that series.
