The upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film has reportedly cast veteran actor Sam Neill in one of his final roles. Neill, who passed away in July at age 78, filmed his contribution to the Nintendo adaptation before his death, according to reports. Principal production on the film concluded in April.
While Neill's specific character in the movie is currently unknown, his casting joins a growing ensemble that includes Yvonne Strahovski, known for her role in Chuck. Strahovski is said to be portraying a "queen character." Dichen Lachman, from Severance, is also reportedly part of the cast and was seen in set photos early in production. Fan speculation has suggested Lachman could be playing Impa, a consistent character in the Zelda series often depicted as a protector or attendant to Princess Zelda.
Neill, celebrated for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has two other posthumous film appearances scheduled. These include Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, slated for release on March 26, and a romantic comedy titled The Last Resort. Depending on the release date of The Last Resort, The Legend of Zelda could represent Neill's last on-screen performance. Neill, a survivor of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, died from pneumonia.
Beyond his iconic role in Jurassic Park, Neill's notable filmography features appearances in films such as Possession, Event Horizon, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. He also made memorable cameos in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. The Legend of Zelda movie is set to premiere on April 30, 2027. Australian actor Uli Latukefu is reportedly cast as the villain Ganondorf, who will face off against Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.
