Shingo Natsume, celebrated for his direction of One-Punch Man’s first season and the surreal original anime Sonny Boy, is preparing to unveil his first original feature film, "Ghost: End of Night." This science-fiction project is slated to premiere in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027.
The film is set in a near-future world where work is obsolete. The story centers on Nike (Mayu Hotta), a 15-year-old girl grappling with dissatisfaction in her comfortable, orderly existence and a growing obsession with finding something she considers "real." Early teasers offer dreamlike imagery and a sense of mystery, hinting at a world where emotions can be visualized within a virtual reality network known as the Orthoverse.
Natsume’s directorial work, including ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. and Boogiepop and Others, showcases his ability to bring a distinctive sensibility to various projects. However, Sonny Boy is considered the prime example of his talent when given the freedom to build a world from the ground up. That 2021 series, which stranded high school students in a bizarre alternate dimension, used its supernatural premise to delve into themes of loneliness, adolescence, and free will. It was noted for its elusive narrative and visual inventiveness, often prioritizing internal character struggles over straightforward plot resolutions.
"Ghost: End of Night" appears to continue this exploration of complex themes, albeit with a different premise. In the Orthoverse, Nike encounters an emotion termed "Flower" within the network's "starry sky" and dismisses it. This detail probes the film’s central ideas: what happens when intangible human feelings can be made visible, named, and subsequently discarded?
Natsume has described "Ghost: End of Night" as a story of "despair and prayer," following Nike as she descends "to the depths of the night" in pursuit of "beautiful things that are truly there" in the darkness. He intends for the film to evoke contradictory emotions often kept hidden.
The production boasts a notable team. Natsume Ono, character designer for ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., is providing original character designs. Animation is handled by Madhouse, Natsume’s long-time collaborator, known for its work on Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Perfect Blue, and Monster.
Alternative rock band Hitsujibungaku has contributed six original songs, including the insert song “Sugar.” Musician Ohzora Kimishima composed the score, marking his debut in anime film scoring. The score is being produced integrally with the movie, a creative approach reminiscent of sonic-centric anime classics like FLCL and Cowboy Bebop. Hitsujibungaku expressed that reading the script consistently brought them to tears.
This fusion of visuals and music is particularly significant for fans of Sonny Boy, where Natsume demonstrated how audio, animation, and ambiguous storytelling could create an immersive mood rather than a passive viewing experience. "Ghost: End of Night" seems poised to extend this philosophy.
While a U.S. theatrical release date and streaming platform have not yet been announced, a manga adaptation is scheduled to begin serialization in the September issue of Young Ace, hitting Japanese shelves in late August. This will offer audiences an additional entry point into Natsume's new world.
"Ghost: End of Night" appears to shift the thematic focus from Sonny Boy’s exploration of finding oneself when the world loses meaning, to questioning what happens when the world makes too much sense, prompting a desperate search for that which doesn't.
