The original Shrek film is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new limited edition 4K Steelbook release. The iconic animated movie, first released in 2001, has cemented its place as a cultural phenomenon, influencing popular culture in numerous ways.
This latest 4K version follows a previous remastering for the film's 20th anniversary in 2021. According to reports, the primary distinction between the 2021 and the current 25th-anniversary edition lies in the Steelbook's cover art. For collectors, this new edition offers a distinct collectible, though those who already own the 4K version might find it a less essential purchase.
The Shrek 25th Anniversary 4K limited-edition Steelbook is available for pre-order at $34.99 and is scheduled for release on November 3. Retailers including Amazon have listed the item, with Walmart also having a page ready for the product's availability.
Beyond the upgraded visual and audio presentation, the discs are packed with a substantial amount of bonus features. These extras include deleted scenes, special featurettes, director and animator commentary, and even full episodes of "The Adventures of Puss in Boots." Some of these supplementary materials were not part of the prior 4K release, potentially making this edition appealing for its extensive content.
Bonus features on the disc include: Origins of an Ogre Spotlight on Donkey Deleted Scenes Secrets of Shrek Shrek in the Swamp Karaoke Dance Party Baha Men "Best Years of Our Lives" Smash Mouth "I'm a Believer" Shrek The Musical "What's Up Duloc?" In parallel with the film's anniversary, DreamWorks has also collaborated with LEGO to launch new Shrek-themed building sets. The initial wave in June featured builds of Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots, while a more recent release introduced 12 mystery minifigures of beloved characters from the franchise.
