Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved a historic feat, securing the largest preview haul in North American movie history. The film garnered $72 million from early access screenings on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of $60 million held by 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

Despite this record-breaking start, it remains to be seen if Spider-Man: Brand New Day will ultimately surpass Avengers: Endgame's monumental opening weekend totals, either domestically or globally. The 2021 release, Spider-Man: No Way Home, also set a high bar with its $260 million domestic opening and $587 million global debut, which stands as the third-best opening weekend of all time.

Sony is projecting a domestic opening weekend for Brand New Day in the range of $190 to $195 million, with an international opening between $275 and $300 million. If these projections hold, the film may fall short of No Way Home's opening weekend performance. Nevertheless, the movie is considered an undeniable success and is on track to be a billion-dollar hit for Sony and Marvel Studios.

The enduring popularity of Spider-Man appears to be largely unaffected by the broader trend of superhero fatigue that has impacted other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The star power of Tom Holland and Zendaya continues to resonate strongly with younger audiences. The MCU's narrative is set to continue with Avengers: Doomsday later this year, with speculation that Spider-Man may feature in that film or in the subsequent Avengers: Secret Wars.
