Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially claimed the title of the biggest domestic opening weekend in history, surpassing Avengers: Endgame. Sony confirmed that the film grossed $360 million in its opening weekend, exceeding initial estimates and dethroning the previous record holder.
Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, expressed his gratitude, stating, "Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it." He attributed the success to the filmmakers, actors, producers, and the marketing and distribution efforts by Sony.
Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day achieved a worldwide total exceeding $930 million, placing it second for all-time opening weekends behind Avengers: Endgame. The film is now projected to cross the $2 billion mark at the box office by the end of its theatrical run, a milestone only reached by seven other films. For comparison, 2022's Spider-Man: No Way Home came close, ending its run with $1,921,426,073.
The movie faces little competition in August, giving it a clear path to dominate the box office. To further capitalize on its success, Sony is releasing Spider-Man: Brand New Day in IMAX this weekend, a move expected to draw both new viewers and repeat customers.
The industry will be watching to see if the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday can reclaim the domestic opening record for the franchise when it releases in December.
