Supergirl has surpassed $100 million at the global box office, but its performance in the second weekend of release has been marked by one of the steepest declines seen in superhero cinema history. The film's sophomore weekend brought in $9.6 million domestically and $9.4 million internationally, contributing to a global total of $100.47 million.
This figure represents a 74% drop from its opening weekend, placing Supergirl's decline in line with other films that have experienced significant second-weekend slumps, such as Joker: Folie à Deux, Morbius, The Marvels, and The Flash. This performance follows a disappointing debut weekend for the DCU installment.
With a reported production budget of $170 million and an additional $120 million allocated for marketing, Supergirl likely needs to earn around $300 million to break even. Initial projections suggested a theatrical run of approximately $200 million, a target that now seems challenging given the substantial drop-off in ticket sales. This financial trajectory puts the film on a path toward a significant loss for Warner Bros. and DC.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn acknowledged the disappointing opening weekend box office, stating, "While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in." Despite Supergirl's position as the second film in the new DCU, its steep decline raises questions about the future momentum of the cinematic universe.
Looking ahead, DC Studios has other projects in development. The body horror spin-off Clayface is slated for release in October 2026, followed by the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow in July 2027. On the television side, the series Lanterns is scheduled to premiere in August. Milly Alcock is set to reprise her role as Supergirl in Man of Tomorrow and is expected to play a significant part in future DCU projects. Reports have also suggested that creative differences between director Craig Gillespie and DC Studios leadership may have impacted the final cut of Supergirl.
