The movie earned $38 million domestically and an additional $30 million internationally, failing to meet expectations which had anticipated a $50 million domestic opening. This performance places the Milly Alcock-led superhero movie below initial projections.
The film's budget reportedly ranges between $170 million and $186 million, not including marketing costs, indicating a significant hurdle for the project to overcome in order to break even. This opening weekend result marks what appears to be the DCU's first theatrical setback.
Reception from critics and audiences has been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 77% score from critics but a lower 56% from fans. While Alcock's portrayal of Kara Zor-El and the movie's practical effects have drawn praise, some viewers have struggled to connect with the narrative. IGN's review awarded Supergirl a 6/10, noting that "Milly Alcock’s great take on Kara Zor-El gets lost in the spare parts from other movies used to assemble her story."
Supergirl landed in the second position at the domestic box office, behind Disney's Toy Story 5, which earned $70 million in its second weekend. Other films performing well included Obsession, securing third place with $9.8 million, and Jackass: Best and Last, which debuted in fourth with $8.4 million. Disclosure Day rounded out the top five with $8.1 million in its third weekend.
