Bandai Namco has announced a new anime series for the long-running fighting game franchise, titled "Tekken! Cartoon." This latest adaptation seems to diverge significantly from previous iterations, adopting a visual style heavily influenced by American animation, particularly shows reminiscent of Cartoon Network from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The announcement was accompanied by a trailer showcasing chibi-styled, recognizable characters such as Kuma, Alisa, Yoshimitsu, Kazuya Mishima, and Paul. These designs are loosely based on their appearances in "Tekken 8" but presented in a distinctly simplified, exaggerated form that aligns with the aesthetic of classic Western cartoons.

The trailer's visual cues, including VHS crackle effects and silhouette designs evoking shows like "Dexter's Laboratory," further emphasize this stylistic choice. While the teaser does not detail the show's plot or its episode format, the accompanying YouTube description lists a comprehensive staff roster. Notably, Japanese animator Amehiro is credited as the character designer, with their distinctive style evident in the character renditions. The series is set to be directed by Sohta Ozawa, who is also the creative director at the talent agency NERD. This agency represents artists such as Hololive VTuber Hoshimachi Suisei and lyricist Taku Inoue, who has contributed to "Tekken" music in the past. NERD's involvement in producing music videos, including for artists like Suisei and Bump of Chicken, suggests a potential for a significant musical element within "Tekken! Cartoon."

The production team includes Amehiro as Character Designer & Animator, and in the blue shirt as Music & Sound Designer, with a cast featuring Tsubasa Tobinaga. Key planning roles are held by Masateru Miyamoto, Syohei Hashimoto, and Hironori Hasegawa, with Sohta Ozawa serving as Director and Mihoko Nakashima as Business Producer. Yuta Kakei is the Director of Photography, supported by assistants Yuki Urakami and Shingo Naramura. The art direction involves Kazuya Imose for Lighting, with Ko Sato and Shota Yamanaka as lighting assistants, Shiho Onuma as Production Designer, and Tomohiro Hirota as Art Assistant. A Digital Imaging Technician, Seiji Uchida, and Hair & Make-up artist Hanako Kaiya are also listed, alongside Stylist Minoru Sugahara. Editing and post-production credits go to Asuka Mochizuki for Offline Editing, Elder Zulpukarov of TREE Digital Studio for Colorist, and Ryunosuke Hayashi for Online Editing. Ken Takahashi is credited for Sound Mixing. Additional design work comes from Shimpei Umeda, with Nozomi Yabuki of FORMEN handling casting. Sora Kanesaki serves as Assistant Director, supported by Production Manager Numanao and Production Assistants Ryoma Saito and Rio Toyoshima. NERD's Asumi Nishiki and Minami Komatsu are involved as Business Producer and Producer, respectively.

This new anime enters a complex history of "Tekken" adaptations. The first was the 1998 direct-to-video film "Tekken: The Motion Picture," which received mixed reception. In 2011, a 3D animated film, "Tekken: Blood Vengeance," focused on the characters Alisa and Xiaoyu. More recently, Netflix released "Tekken: Bloodline," an anime loosely based on "Tekken 3," which was largely criticized for its visuals and narrative. The franchise itself has seen recent shifts, including the departure of long-time director Katsuhiro Harada from Bandai Namco to SNK, and mixed reactions to "Tekken 8's" gameplay balance and offensive focus among some players. Despite these developments, the series continues to surprise, most recently with the crossover addition of Yujiro Hanma from the "Baki" manga and anime series.
