HBO executives believe that the upcoming third season of their adaptation of The Last of Us will serve as the series' conclusion. HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed this expectation in a recent interview with Deadline, stating that showrunner Craig Mazin has structured the season as a finale.
Season 3 is slated for a 2027 release, although a specific launch date within the year has not yet been announced. Bloys previously indicated in January that Season 3 seemed to be the final season, emphasizing that the ultimate decision rested with Mazin. "He has planned it as the final season," Bloys said regarding Mazin's vision.
Mazin himself had previously suggested that a fourth season might be necessary to adequately conclude the narrative. However, Bloys has indicated that the story may be wrapped up within Season 3, which could potentially be extended in length. "Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that," Bloys stated in 2025.
A notable shift for the third season is the reduced involvement of franchise creator Naughty Dog. Neil Druckmann, who was a writer and director on previous seasons, has stepped away from his creative roles on the show. Druckmann has stated that his departure is to focus on his work with Naughty Dog's video game projects, including a potential role in The Last of Us Part III. This season will also feature the debut of The Heretic Prophet, which Druckmann is directing.
