The upcoming film adaptation of Nintendo's iconic Legend of Zelda franchise will simply be titled "The Legend of Zelda," according to series creator Shigeru Miyamoto. During a recent Nintendo Direct presentation celebrating the franchise's 40th anniversary, Miyamoto shared this detail alongside early hints about the movie's narrative and thematic direction.
Miyamoto explained that the decision to forego a subtitle, unlike previous Nintendo adaptations such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will become clear upon viewing the film. He stated that the movie is an original production drawing from the series' 40-year history of stories, ideas, and concepts. Both Nintendo's development team and Miyamoto himself are involved in the creative process.
While specific plot details remain scarce, Miyamoto alluded to the significant role the Triforce will play in the film. "When we talk about The Legend of Zelda, there's the Triforce," he said, posing the question of its function in the movie and promising further information at a later date. The film is slated for release on April 30, 2027.
Previously announced casting includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, Bo Bragason as Zelda, Uli Latufeku as Ganondorf, and Dichen Lachman as Impa, among other actors whose roles are not yet officially confirmed. Some potential plot points were previously suggested by leaked set photos, though these have since been removed.
Similar to the recent animated Mario films, a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation is anticipated to reveal the movie's first trailer.
