Christopher Nolan's latest directorial effort, The Odyssey, has officially become his highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing the $1.1 billion mark at the global box office. This achievement overtakes the previous record holder, The Dark Knight Rises, which grossed $1.08 billion.

The film continues to show remarkable staying power, pulling in $110 million domestically in its fourth weekend alone. With its release in China, a significant global film market, still pending, The Odyssey is poised to further increase its box office total.

This milestone places Christopher Nolan as the third highest-grossing director in history, with a cumulative worldwide box office gross exceeding $7 billion. He trails only James Cameron and Steven Spielberg in this metric.

The Odyssey has also set a new record as IMAX's highest-grossing release ever, earning $289 million and surpassing Avatar's previous record of $271 million. A notable 14 percent of this IMAX gross comes from 70mm showings, an impressive figure given the limited number of theaters capable of this format globally. The film's popularity in IMAX and 70mm screenings is considered a key factor in its sustained box office performance.

Furthermore, The Odyssey is now the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. It has a realistic chance of eclipsing the current record holder, Deadpool and Wolverine's $1.3 billion gross.

This year, 2026, is shaping up to be a strong comeback for the film industry, with The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day contributing significantly to the box office. The domestic box office is on track for a $10 billion year for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also in contention to become the first film to achieve $1 billion domestically and $3 billion worldwide. Beyond these major blockbusters, independent films like Obsession and Backrooms have also exceeded expectations, indicating a vibrant cinematic landscape.
