The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to stream on Peacock beginning July 30, according to an update on the streaming service's website. The film, which is the highest-grossing movie of 2026 and the first to surpass $1 billion at the box office this year, originally premiered in theaters on April 1.
After a 45-day theatrical window, the movie became available for digital purchase and was later released on Blu-ray in mid-June. As of this writing, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has earned over $429 million domestically and surpassed $1 billion worldwide. While it has left theaters, its total gross did not match the $1.3 billion achieved by the first film, which is also available on Peacock.
IGN's review gave the sequel a 6/10, noting its strengths but criticizing a weaker narrative core. Shigeru Miyamoto, in response to the film's critical reception compared to its predecessor, expressed surprise, stating he thought the reviews would be different this time around.
The sequel introduced new characters and voice actors, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Rosalina, who received a new canon backstory, and Donald Glover as Yoshi. Glenn Powell also debuted as Star Fox, a reveal that preceded the film's premiere and led into a "Star Fox summer" that included the launch of a Star Fox 64 remake for the Switch 2.
While no official announcement has been made regarding future collaborations between Nintendo and Illumination, Universal has included a placeholder project between the two studios on its 2028 release schedule. Rumors suggest a Donkey Kong movie is a possibility, and Jack Black has indicated his willingness to participate in a third Mario film.
Looking ahead, Nintendo's next film venture will be the live-action Zelda movie, a collaboration with Sony Pictures slated for release on April 30, 2027. This project will not involve Illumination.
In related news, Illumination's latest release, Minions and Monsters, the third dedicated Minions movie, has received significant praise. IGN's 8/10 review called it an "ode to early Hollywood and to the power of cinema and storytelling."
