Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are set to revive the 1990s film "Days of Thunder" with a sequel scheduled to release in 2028. Anne Hathaway will co-star in the film, which continues the narrative of Cole Trickle, Cruise's character from the original NASCAR-centric movie. The announcement follows earlier rumors of a potential revival of the franchise.

Cruise confirmed the news via a video shared on X, which also revealed a special race car livery hinting at a summer 2028 release. While plot details remain under wraps, Paramount has confirmed that Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle. Hathaway is set to play a "team owner and engineer" integral to the sequel's story. The film is slated for theatrical release on June 2, 2028.

The script for the "Days of Thunder" sequel was penned by Will Staples, known for "Without Remorse," and the film will be directed by Jonathan Levine, director of "Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story." In line with Cruise's advocacy for theatrical releases, "Days of Thunder" is confirmed to be filmed and released in premium formats including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX.

Prior to the "Days of Thunder" sequel, Tom Cruise is expected to appear in Alejandro Iñárritu's "Digger" later this year, in a role described as unusual for the actor.
