The acclaimed anime film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is set to return to North American theaters in 2027, distributor GKIDS announced over the weekend during the Anime NYC expo. This marks a significant re-release for the cult classic, which originally saw a limited theatrical run in the United States in 2001, screening in only twelve theaters.

In addition to the planned theatrical distribution, GKIDS also intends to produce physical home media for Bloodlust. The film was produced at Madhouse, a studio known for its work on Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, a prominent figure from the adult anime boom of the 1980s and 1990s. The movie is based on novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi, with character designs provided by Yoshitaka Amano, the renowned artist behind the Final Fantasy series.

The official synopsis describes the plot: After a young woman is seemingly abducted by the vampire Baron Meier Link, her father hires D – a vampire-hunting “Dunpeal” – to rescue her. As D traverses the wastelands, he must contend with a group of mercenary hunters and uncover the complex truth surrounding the woman.

Despite critical acclaim, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust did not achieve the same widespread recognition as contemporary anime films like Akira or Ghost in the Shell. However, it has cultivated a dedicated cult following over the years, largely due to its exceptional production design. The film's gothic world is brought to life through a combination of traditional hand-drawn animation and digital compositing, with intricate details that enrich its dense world-building and visual style.

The Anime NYC event also brought other Vampire Hunter D news, including Dark Horse's announcement of a new four-issue comic series titled Fortress of Blood. Furthermore, the eighth book in the series, The Rose Princess, is slated for an English translation next June, indicating a significant year for fans of the franchise in 2027.
