A new trailer for the survival horror film Whalefall has been released by 20th Century Studios, showcasing a diver's terrifying ordeal after being swallowed by a giant sperm whale. The film is based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Kraus.
Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner, played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself inside a whale with only an hour of oxygen remaining. He must find a way to escape before suffocating and becoming the creature's prey. The trailer features narration from his father, played by Josh Brolin, offering words of encouragement such as, "Remember: survivors survive."
Austin Abrams is set to have a notable autumn season, with Whalefall arriving shortly after his appearance in the upcoming Resident Evil film. In that movie, Abrams portrays a new character, distinct from series mainstays like Leon S. Kennedy. Director Zach Cregger described the character as someone less experienced with firearms, aiming for a relatable sense of being a player on the run. This theme of survival against overwhelming odds appears to be a common thread for Abrams' characters this season, whether facing zombies or a hungry whale.
Whalefall is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 16.
