Fans of the animated series X-Men '97 received significant updates regarding the show's future at Comic-Con, with Marvel revealing key details about the third and fourth seasons. The "Marvel Comics to Screen" panel confirmed the return of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in Season 3, a group that has been notably absent from the revival series thus far.
Attendees were treated to an early look at Season 3 through a clip showcasing the Brotherhood. The team, comprising Pyro, Avalanche, Blob, and Toad, was depicted in a scene where they were spray-painting "mutant freedom" on a building. This sequence also introduced Surge, an electricity-wielding teenage mutant who joins the Brotherhood and energizes their graffiti with a powerful blast. The clip concluded with the introduction of a new Sentinel variant, distinguished by its patriotic blue coloration, which then engaged the Brotherhood.
This preview clip offered insight into the thematic direction of Season 3. While the X-Men are expected to conclude their conflict with Apocalypse within the current season, the events of Season 3 suggest that tensions between mutants and the U.S. government will remain a central issue in the aftermath.
Executive producer Brad Winderbaum provided an update on the production timeline, stating that animation for Season 3 is nearing completion while animatics for Season 4 are in progress. Based on this schedule, Season 3 is anticipated for release sometime in 2027.
