The beloved animated film Your Name is set to return to theaters in a 4K remastered version to commemorate its 10th anniversary. Directed by Makoto Shinkai, the 2016 movie has been widely celebrated as a masterpiece of animation since its initial release. The 4K screenings are scheduled to begin on August 14.
Distributor GKIDS announced the re-release on June 6 via X, following the company's significant presence at this year's Anime Expo. GKIDS is recognized for its role in distributing international Japanese films and often releases physical media editions of its library. The company also earned an Oscar in 2024 for its work on Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron.
GKIDS describes Your Name as a story where "One morning, rural schoolgirl Mitsuha and city kid Taki awaken to discover that they’ve switched bodies. The total strangers struggle to navigate each other’s lives, walking tightropes of intimacy and distance. But when they finally resolve to meet, the true nature of their connection threatens to seal their fate."
The film is praised for its stunning animation, compelling voice performances in both Japanese and English, and a memorable soundtrack by Japanese rock band Radwimps. The narrative of Mitsuha and Taki is often highlighted as a particularly special intertwining love story.
Specific theater listings for the 4K remaster have not yet been released, but GKIDS is offering a sign-up on its website for updates. In addition to the theatrical run, GKIDS is also launching new Blu-ray and 4K UHD Steelbook editions of Your Name. These editions, available for pre-order, include bonus features such as behind-the-scenes content and an interview with Makoto Shinkai. For those eager to watch before the anniversary screenings, Your Name is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and YouTubeTV.
