Director Zach Cregger provided an update on his upcoming prequel film focusing on the character Aunt Gladys, confirming that the script is currently in development. Cregger expressed his enthusiasm for the project at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, stating his enjoyment of working with actress Amy Madigan, who portrayed Gladys in the film 'Weapons.'

While 'Weapons' intentionally kept Gladys's backstory enigmatic, Cregger believes there is a compelling narrative to explore regarding her origins and how she became the character seen in the film. He described the potential prequel as featuring "lots of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things," akin to the tone of 'Weapons.' The script is being written with seriousness and is progressing positively.

Interest in a prequel emerged shortly after the release of 'Weapons' in August 2025. Cregger had previously confirmed development talks with Warner Bros. in September 2025. By April 2026, reports indicated that Zach Shields, known for 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters,' would co-write the script with Cregger. The working title for the project is currently 'Gladys.'

Despite the active work on the Aunt Gladys film, Cregger clarified that it will not be his next directorial effort. His next project will be the sci-fi thriller 'The Flood,' produced by Amblin Entertainment, with a scheduled release date of August 11, 2028. The 'Gladys' prequel is slated to follow that film. Additionally, Cregger is involved in producing a 'Siren Head' film.

Cregger also touched upon his approach to directing 'Resident Evil,' describing it as a straightforward, relentless narrative. He aimed to maintain a high level of intensity throughout the film. He is scheduled to discuss the upcoming 'Resident Evil' film with star Austin Abrams at Comic-Con.
