Zach Cregger's directorial debut, "Barbarian," is finally receiving a physical 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SteelBook release on August 11, after a prolonged campaign by the director for its availability.
The upcoming release will feature considerable bonus content, including an audio commentary track with writer-director Zach Cregger and producer Roy Lee. A featurette titled "Behind Barbarian" will offer interviews with Cregger, cast, and crew, delving into the film's horror elements and inspirations. Deleted scenes will also be included.
Cregger, a founding member of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know, expressed his desire for a physical release for "Barbarian" for years. "I have banged the drum, made phone calls, and tried my best to get some sort of physical media," Cregger stated about a year ago, noting a lack of progress at the time. His persistence appears to have paid off with 20th Century Studios.
"Barbarian" garnered critical acclaim and achieved significant box office success, grossing over $45 million against a modest $4.5 million production budget. This success solidified Cregger's standing in the horror genre. He followed up the film with "Weapons," which earned $270 million on a $38 million budget and received award-season attention, notably an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Amy Madigan's performance.
Fans are also anticipating Cregger's next project, a reboot of the "Resident Evil" film series. Cregger, a self-proclaimed fan of the games, has indicated that the film will focus on an original character caught in the events of "Resident Evil 2," aiming for a different approach than previous adaptations. The movie is slated for theatrical release on September 18.
The "Barbarian" SteelBook edition will contain both a 4K UHD Blu-ray and a standard Blu-ray disc. Audio options will include English, French, and Spanish 5.1 DTS-HDMA, along with English Dolby 2.0 Digital Descriptive Audio. Subtitles will be available in these languages as well.
