Bandai Namco has detailed Ace Combat Online, a new suite of live-service-inspired multiplayer modes set to accompany Ace Combat 8. These modes will offer a mix of cooperative and competitive experiences, alongside a dedicated social area for players.
Ace Combat Online will include several PvE options. Co-Op Assault pits two teams of four players against each other in a race to accumulate points by defeating AI-controlled enemies and completing objectives. Co-Op Warfare expands on this with a PvPvE format, where each of the two teams of four is supported by allied AI units while simultaneously competing against the opposing human team. In this mode, defeating enemies raises a player's threat level, increasing point gains and the bounty placed on them by the opposing team.
Limited-time events called Emergency missions will also be featured. These include Scramble, where a team of four must eliminate an NPC rival squad, and Emergency Sorties, which place eight players in raid-style PvE engagements against a series of set-piece battles drawn from the Ace Combat series' history. Additionally, the online component will offer 4v4 team battles and eight-player free-for-all missions, some of which may implement player restrictions for competitive balance.
Progression in Ace Combat Online will involve earning experience to unlock new aircraft, special weapons, and customization parts. Players can also acquire abilities and cosmetic items through gameplay with specific aircraft. The online modes will be supported by an Ace Pass system, featuring both free and paid tiers, with new content unlocked across two-month seasons. Aircraft introduced in these passes will reportedly become available for purchase after their respective seasons conclude.
A novel addition to the Ace Combat experience is the introduction of an airforce base, serving as a social hub. Here, player avatars can interact with each other, form teams between missions, and engage with retro Bandai Namco arcade games like Pac-Man. Players can also interact with a jukebox to play music from the Ace Combat series' soundtracks. This social space was developed in response to player feedback following Ace Combat 7's success, with the goal of fostering community among the game's global fanbase and encouraging long-term engagement with Ace Combat 8, similar to the longevity experienced by its predecessor.
