Cold Iron Studios' Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 has launched to a lukewarm reception, struggling to recapture the appeal of its predecessor. While early Steam reviews initially flagged numerous technical problems and narrative shortcomings, a deeper dive reveals a game that, despite some satisfying combat mechanics, ultimately feels mediocre and forgettable.

The sequel introduces a four-player squad structure, an evolution from the original's three-player limit, and features a story-driven campaign spanning 15 missions that can take between 20 to 30 minutes each to complete. Post-campaign, players can engage with meta-progression systems for each character class and a Horde mode designed to extend the game's longevity.

However, the narrative is widely considered a weak point. The story follows a fringe group of Colonial Marines investigating a derelict mining facility, but any initial intrigue quickly dissipates due to what is described as unfunny and annoying dialogue. Many players find themselves button-mashing through conversations to get to the action.

The core gameplay loop of shooting Xenomorphs remains a strong suit. Guns possess a satisfying impact and crunch, enhanced by new elemental ammunition types that elevate shootouts into visual spectacles. Experimenting with different weapons and character classes, including the new build-your-own multiclass Specialist, offers moments of genuine fun. Combining abilities, such as the Machinist’s turret and the Hunter’s stasis bolt, proved particularly effective against enemy hordes.

Despite these engaging combat moments, the game's shortcomings are often tied to its level and mission design, which can frequently devolve into simple point-to-point objectives. These lulls are punctuated by the chaotic shootouts that evoke the spirit of the original game, but the feeling is short-lived, often interrupted by uninspired story beats or technical problems.

Players have reported significant online connectivity issues, even with wired connections, leading to lost progress. While the PlayStation 5 version appears to have fewer technical issues than the PC port, frame rate drops were still noted as being more frequent than expected for a new release. Cold Iron Studios has acknowledged some of these problems and committed to addressing them, though they impacted the launch experience.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is described by critics as akin to "video game fast food"—briefly enjoyable but ultimately forgettable. While not as outright flawed as some early reviews suggested, it struggles to stand out in a crowded genre of co-op shooters. The game is now available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
