After years of speculation, Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the announcement of the iPhone Duo at its "Surprise and Shine" September event. This new device stands apart from competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold with its consistent aspect ratio in both folded and unfolded states.
When folded, the iPhone Duo presents a 5.4-inch display, comparable in size to a passport. Upon unfolding, it expands to a 7.6-inch screen. Both displays share a 1.4:1 aspect ratio, a shape Apple suggests is optimized for viewing traditional 16:9 content by minimizing letterboxing. The screen technology utilizes wide-angle OLEDs capable of a 3,000-nit peak brightness. Apple also claims significant advancements in mitigating the display crease, employing a "nano-texture display" designed to maintain screen feel while remaining visually unobtrusive. When unfolded, the iPhone Duo is reportedly the thinnest iPhone ever produced.
Powering the device is the new A20 Pro chipset, also found in the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple has implemented a vapor chamber cooling system to address potential thermal challenges common in foldable devices. A key feature highlighted is the A20 Pro's ability to simultaneously drive both internal and external displays, promising minimal delay when switching between them. The user interface has been overhauled for the Duo, with primary controls and the dynamic island relocated to the side of the screen for easier one-handed operation. The unique aspect ratio is also expected to offer an enhanced experience for gaming and video consumption.
Apple showcased several innovative use cases for the foldable form factor. The device can be semi-folded and propped up in a "Standby mode," functioning as a bedside clock and alarm. The camera system benefits from the dual screens, allowing the subject to preview the image on the outer display before a photo is taken. For capturing children's attention, a feature can display animations to help focus them towards the camera. Duo FaceTime is designed to leverage both internal and external screens and cameras, allowing participants on both sides of the call to engage more directly.
The primary camera sensor is a 48-megapixel unit, similar to the iPhone 18 Pro, though it omits that phone's physical aperture shutter. The internal under-display camera is 12 megapixels. Battery life, a common concern for foldables, is addressed with Apple's claim of "all-day" usage for the iPhone Duo.
The iPhone Duo will be offered in Night Sky and Star White color options. It starts at $1,999 for 256GB of storage, priced $100 less than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Preorders begin October 16, with availability commencing on October 23.
