Embark Studios has rolled out significant adjustments to the matchmaking system in its cooperative PvE shooter, Arc Raiders. The goal of these changes is to improve the quality of matches by better aligning players based on their behavior within different squad sizes.
Developers explained in a blog post that the updated algorithm will now take individual player conduct into account, allowing for more tailored matchmaking. This means a player who adopts an aggressive, solo-focused playstyle in trios might be matched differently than someone who prioritizes teamwork. The intention is to create "more fair and enjoyable raids" by pairing players with similar mindsets and squad compositions.
However, this enhanced matchmaking comes with a trade-off: players may experience longer queue times. Embark has cautioned that the algorithm is now "working harder to find you a better one," which necessitates a potentially longer wait to secure a more suitable match. This adjustment is particularly noticeable during off-peak hours, in less populated regions, or under specific map conditions where the player pool is smaller.
While the matchmaking improvements are designed to benefit the player experience, some players have previously questioned the necessity of such complex matchmaking, suggesting simpler solutions like manually separating PvE and PvP modes. Embark appears committed to refining the current system, aiming to make players more comfortable within their chosen game modes, even while acknowledging the inherent unpredictability that can arise from potential PvP encounters within PvE environments.
The studio recognizes that there is still "room for improvement," especially concerning queue speed. Embark has stated they are actively working to address these longer waiting times, with the hope that future updates will expedite the process of finding matches without compromising on quality.
