ArenaNet and NCSoft have revealed a new entry in the Guild Wars universe, Mistbound, a digital collectible card game (CCG) that aims to offer a fresh take on the genre. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the recent reveal of Guild Wars 3, indicating a significant expansion of the franchise beyond its MMORPG roots. Mistbound is being developed by NC, with involvement from bilibili, and is licensed by ArenaNet. According to ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson, the game is designed to provide Guild Wars fans with a new cooperative and competitive experience, drawing inspiration from the franchise's card game origins. "We felt it was time to give Guild Wars fans a new way to play together, inspired by the card game roots of the franchise, where they could compete in a competitive PvP arena in a CCG game space," Johanson stated. "Having all those experiences they love of the characters and creatures and the sounds of the world of Tyria brought to life in CCG."

The development team cites Magic: The Gathering as an inspiration for the original Guild Wars, particularly its approach to character build customization. Mistbound introduces a novel feature: a dynamic 5x3 tactical grid where cards representing units and commanders can be deployed and repositioned turn-by-turn. This "dynamic movement gameplay," as NC calls it, is intended to make the strategic depth of CCGs more accessible. Producer Hwang Sunwoo explained that the complexity in Mistbound is intended to be expressed through the battlefield rather than overly complicated individual cards. Players will be able to utilize mechanics such as knockbacks, pulls, and flanking, while familiar Guild Wars characters will appear as commanders with unique abilities. Mistbound will feature a soundtrack with contributions from the original Guild Wars musicians and voice performances from established characters. Bilibili's involvement suggests a focus on community development and fostering direct player input during the game's creation, with potential aspirations for Mistbound to become a significant esport title. While a specific release date has not yet been announced, the game is not expected to launch before the end of the current year, with a likely release sometime in 2027.
