An animator involved with the recent animated film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender shared an early, unused animatic that showcased a significantly more brutal version of the battle against Tagah. The scene, which was later deleted, depicted Aang's friends being killed more explicitly and violently than in the final cut.
Tom Barkel, an animator on the project, posted the animatic to X, though the post has since been deleted. Fans managed to save the video before its removal. The sequence in question is an alternate take on the fight that occurs while Aang is retrieving Sonam’s staff. In the released film, Tagah betrays Team Avatar, destroying their airship and then engaging Katara. While Toph, Zuko, and Sokka join the fight, Tagah eventually incapacitates them all. It is later revealed that Tagah's attacks were fatal, requiring Katara to revive them with spiritually enhanced water.
Barkel's animatic maintained the same narrative outcome—Tagah winning the battle—but the depiction of the characters' demise was far more graphic. In this version, Tagah fights with visible rage, striking his opponents with such force that they cough up blood before succumbing, their eyes vacant. The pacing of the animatic allowed for each character's death to be processed by the others and the audience, making the sequence particularly grim. One notable moment showed Tagah executing Sokka in front of Katara, an event described as deeply uncomfortable.
Commenters on X suggested that Tagah's aggression might have been targeted based on the characters' nationalities, with a particular focus on Toph and Zuko due to their people's past actions against his own. While the characters cannot canonically die in this prequel to The Legend of Korra, where they are either alive or pass away much later, Barkel's cut scene offers a disturbing glimpse into how the confrontation could have unfolded with heightened violence.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is currently available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
