Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game has encountered significant last-minute hurdles, with its Xbox version now delayed until September and the Nintendo Switch release launching without cross-play functionality. These changes were announced mere hours before the game's initial planned release.

The delay for the Xbox version is attributed to "unforeseen circumstances on a backend feature," according to a statement on the game's X account. The PlayStation 5 and Windows PC versions are unaffected and will launch as scheduled. This setback means the Xbox release is postponed by approximately three months, pushing its availability to September 3.

This delay is particularly impactful for a fighting game, as a smaller player base at launch can hinder the experience. The absence of cross-play on the Nintendo Switch version at launch will further fragment the player community. Additionally, the Switch version will initially only offer the Standard Edition. The Deluxe Edition, which includes a digital art book, soundtrack, and the Year 1 Pass for DLC characters, will not be available on Switch at launch. The developers aim to address these limitations in future updates, with localization beyond English also being a future goal for the Switch version.

Evidence of the game's development being in flux is also apparent in recent character adjustments. In pre-release versions of the game, three of the twelve characters received significant animation and gameplay overhauls. Developers indicated in an interview that Avatar Aang and Nightmare Korra, alternate versions of the protagonists, will see further work. Ozai was noted to still have placeholder animations in the pre-release build and underwent a substantial gameplay rework shortly before the game's planned launch.

While these significant character changes close to release are unusual, they may have been compromises made to ensure the game launched concurrently with the new Avatar movie. Despite these launch challenges, the core fighting mechanics have been described as enjoyable.
