BeamNG.drive, a popular vehicular sandbox known for its detailed soft-body physics and crash damage, has received its most substantial update yet, version 0.39. This patch introduces a comprehensive graphics and lighting overhaul, aiming to enhance the visual fidelity of the long-running simulation.

The update brings "massive graphics changes" to the game, which developers state will result in more stable shadows and the introduction of HDR output support for both Vulkan and Direct3D 12 rendering paths. Players can also expect physically correct light attenuation and dynamic ambient lighting, contributing to more realistic environmental illumination. A notable detail is the addition of an accurate night sky, which the patch notes confirm is based on real astronomical values. This includes rendering of the Milky Way and a database of constellations, synchronized with the player's in-game latitude, longitude, date, and time of day.

Beyond the graphical enhancements, BeamNG.drive's user interface has also been refreshed. The update features a redesigned pause menu, improved gamepad functionality, and a revamped UI for replays. The developers have also focused on increasing the game's moddability, an important aspect given the simulation's extensive modding community. While the UI changes aim to improve usability, it is acknowledged that the interface may still present a learning curve for new players.

Further additions in this update include an overhauled photo mode, more realistic vehicle lighting systems, and a new aerodynamic physics system. Map improvements have also been implemented, alongside memory optimizations and updated ambient audio. For new content, a new Cherrier Ardente vehicle has been added, described as one of the best-looking vehicles developed for the game to date, featuring a contemporary exterior design and a sporty interior. An all-gravel Rally Loop and a freeroam tutorial are also now available.

BeamNG.drive has been in early access for eleven years, originating from the Steam Greenlight platform. A PlayStation 5 version is currently in development, with continued updates planned for the PC version.
