Bethesda Softworks has revealed an expansive future for the Fallout franchise, confirming that Fallout 5 is in pre-production and that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are planned for modern platforms. This announcement comes as part of a broader effort to reinvest in the series, which has seen a yearslong drought of new titles.
Fallout Franchise Expansion
In an official statement, Bethesda confirmed multiple Fallout projects are currently in active development. Fallout 5 is described as the studio's "long-range destination." Additionally, a major expansion for Fallout 76, titled Raven Rock, is scheduled for 2027. This expansion will serve as a prequel story to Fallout 3.
Bethesda also officially announced remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. While no specific release window or further details were provided, these projects have reportedly been in development for many years. The existence of a Fallout 3 remaster first surfaced in 2020 through court documents related to Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Fallout 3 was originally released in 2008, developed by Bethesda after they acquired the franchise rights. Set in the post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. two centuries after a nuclear war, the game follows a Vault dweller searching for their father. Fallout: New Vegas followed in 2010, developed by Obsidian Entertainment. This title took players to the Mojave Desert as a courier entangled in a conflict between various factions vying for regional control.
These remasters follow Bethesda's recent re-releases, including The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered and the Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition in 2025, which bundled the original game, all DLC, and over 150 Creation Club items.
Future Events and Anniversaries
Bethesda has stated that a traditional "Fallout Day broadcast" will not occur in 2026. However, the company is planning "something special for Fallout's 30th anniversary in 2027," when Fallout Day will be celebrated live in Washington, D.C. Bethesda has marked Oct. 23, the in-universe date of the Great War, as Fallout Day since 2024.
