Bethesda has reaffirmed its commitment to Starfield, announcing that new content for the expansive RPG is planned for release in 2027. This update comes as the game enters its third year since its September 2023 launch, with the developer stating that Starfield continues to be an "important part" of its future. The studio intends to expand the game with fresh narratives, targeted gameplay enhancements, and additional updates, including new "Starborn content" specifically slated for 2027.
Starfield has reached a broad audience, with over 17 million individuals engaging with the title. Its availability on Xbox Game Pass has contributed to its wide reach, supplementing direct sales. The game has already seen significant expansion since its initial release. An expansion titled Shattered Space arrived in 2024, and further content was released in 2026, including the Free Lanes update and a new story expansion called Terran Armada, alongside a PlayStation 5 release.
These announcements were made amidst broader updates from Bethesda regarding its other major franchises. The studio confirmed that Fallout 5 has officially entered pre-production, and remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are also in development. Regarding the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda shared that development is progressing as planned, with the team "loving how it looks, and playing it every day."
The updates from Bethesda come at a period of significant restructuring for its parent company, Xbox. Microsoft recently initiated widespread layoffs, impacting 1,600 employees and signaling further workforce reductions. The company also confirmed plans to divest certain studios as part of a broader business reset.
