A documentary exploring the rise and fall of BioWare, the studio behind franchises like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, is scheduled for release in 2027. Titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, the film will be broadcast by Canada's Super Channel, according to a report from Deadline.

Filming for the documentary reportedly began two years ago, suggesting it will offer insights into both the studio's early years and its more recent struggles, including its work on the now-canceled Mass Effect: Universe. Original studio founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip are slated to appear, alongside numerous other developers who contributed to BioWare's history. These include Casey Hudson, Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen, and Caroline Livingstone. Jennifer Hale, the voice actress for female Commander Shepard, will also be featured.

"When the production team asked for our blessing to tell the BioWare story, we were honored and deeply moved," BioWare co-founders Muzyka and Zeschuk stated in a press release. "BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories brought to life by the amazing people on our dev teams, and the fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward. We're proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again."

The documentary is set to premiere through a film festival run before its worldwide distribution by UpstreamFlix. This announcement follows the recent shutdown of BioWare on October 21, which has prompted considerable fan reaction. Efforts to "save" Mass Effect have included fan-organized billboards in Times Square, graffiti on publisher EA's offices, and an e-petition to the Canadian government advocating for employees to acquire the studio and its intellectual property. The petition has already surpassed the required signatures to be heard by the House of Commons.
