Following the completion of the ambitious Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy with next January's Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Square Enix is looking to invest primarily in new game titles, according to producer Yoshinori Kitase. In an interview with IGN, Kitase stated that while the success of the FF7 Remake project might inspire future remakes, the company's focus is shifting.
Kitase noted that many involved in the FF7 Remake project, including himself, had a personal connection to the original game, which fueled the desire for its reimagining. He suggested that similar sentiments could arise for other Square Enix titles, potentially leading to remakes. "So there might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects," Kitase said.
Square Enix has a history of blending old and new within its franchises, as seen with Final Fantasy Resonance, a 2D-HD title that revisits the mobile game Brave Exvius and incorporates characters from across the Final Fantasy universe. Looking beyond games, Kitase expressed interest in expanding the Final Fantasy brand into other media, such as TV series inspired by the game's stories. A previous attempt at an animated adaptation of Final Fantasy IX was reportedly shelved after the production company filed for bankruptcy.
While Kitase himself is eager to work on new projects after a decade dedicated to the FF7 Remake, he acknowledged the strong fan desire for other remakes. "Inside the company and also among the Final Fantasy fans, there’s been many people asking for a remake of Final Fantasy VI, so who knows?" he commented, leaving the possibility open for other developers within Square Enix.
