Magic: The Gathering's forthcoming set, Reality Fracture, is poised to bring back a legendary piece of the game's history: the Black Lotus. However, this iconic card will manifest not as a playable card, but as a colorless artifact token, according to teases from Magic's principal designer Mark Rosewater.

Rosewater revealed details about the new set through blog posts, offering hints about mechanics, card names, and creature types. Among these revelations is the existence of a token named Lotus, which can be tapped and sacrificed to add three mana of any one color. This ability mirrors that of the original Black Lotus, a cornerstone of the game's Power Nine from its 1993 release, renowned for its ability to grant an enormous mana advantage early in the game.

The Black Lotus itself is currently banned in Commander and Legacy formats and restricted to one copy in Vintage. Its immense value is underscored by a 2024 auction where a mint Alpha version sold for $3 million.

This is not the first time Magic has introduced variations on the Black Lotus theme. Previous iterations like Gilded Lotus and Jeweled Lotus have offered similar mana-generating capabilities, though often with limitations or higher casting costs. Jeweled Lotus, for instance, can only be used to cast a Commander and is itself banned in that format. Lotus Petal provides a single mana upon sacrifice, while a humorous "Blacker Lotus" card requires destruction to activate its mana ability.

The exact method by which the new Lotus token will be generated in Reality Fracture remains undisclosed. Rosewater's hints suggest it could be created by an instant or sorcery spell, a creature's activated ability, a conditional trigger, or a permanent that repeatedly produces the tokens. A particularly intriguing possibility is that a planeswalker ability could be responsible, perhaps even tied to Jace, who headlines one of the set's Commander decks.

Reality Fracture is described as the conclusion of an ongoing saga, and it will feature prominent planeswalkers and legendary creatures, including alternate-reality versions of characters from various planes. These Echoverse counterparts are often portrayed with inverted personalities and color alignments. For example, Lyra from Dominaria and Tomik from Ravnica will have alt-reality counterparts, as will characters like Winter and Yoshimaru.

Official previews for Reality Fracture commence on September 8, with pre-release events beginning September 25. Further details regarding the card that unleashes Magic's most notorious flower are expected before the set's wider release.
