Blizzard has confirmed the termination of an employee following an incident where developer tools were allegedly used to help a group of friends complete a difficult Mythic+ dungeon in World of Warcraft. The situation came to light earlier this week through a Reddit thread highlighting a suspicious Mythic+ 23 dungeon run.
Analysis of the dungeon run on Warcraftlogs, a player-used performance tracking site, revealed that the group could not have completed the dungeon within the time limit under normal circumstances. Logs indicated that after defeating the final boss, the group still needed to eliminate additional enemies from earlier in the dungeon. However, the dungeon was ultimately cleared in its final moments, aided by a spell identified as "Area Death (TEST)," which reportedly instantly defeated all remaining enemies.
This spell is not available to players, leading to the immediate suspicion that a Blizzard employee, potentially a gamemaster (GM), had intervened. Given the competitive nature of high-level Mythic+ content, which offers exclusive titles, rewards, and recognition for top-ranked players, such an alleged instance of cheating raised significant concerns within the World of Warcraft community.
Further details emerged when streamer Yumytv aired an interview with a member of the dungeon group. The individual claimed they had contacted a GM friend via voice chat in a moment of desperation, realizing they would not meet the time requirement for the key. The group member stated their intention was not malicious and that they would accept any penalties, such as the revocation of earned rewards. They admitted that they did not anticipate the GM friend would act on the request and acknowledged in hindsight that the action was inappropriate.
Blizzard has since confirmed that the employee involved is no longer with the company and that action is being taken against the players who benefited from the illicit assistance. In a statement, Blizzard explained that a limited number of employees have access to developer tools and spells for live server testing and urgent fixes. All uses of these internal commands are logged and reviewed by the Platform Security team to ensure proper application. The company emphasized that using development tools for any purpose other than development work violates company policy. Based on their internal processes, Blizzard is confident that this incident was isolated to a single individual.
The company also expressed gratitude to the World of Warcraft community for their engagement and commitment to maintaining the game's competitive integrity, stating, "We're grateful for the way we work alongside you all to protect the game and each other."
