Gearbox has unveiled Loveless the Hacker, the sixth playable Vault Hunter coming to Borderlands 4 on September 10. This new character is designed to fill the assassin archetype, a role previously occupied by the fan-favorite Zer0 from Borderlands 2. Loveless brings a suite of high-tech and stealth-focused abilities to the looter-shooter, alongside new combat mechanics.

Loveless's backstory positions her as a cybersecurity expert who was formerly employed by Anshin, a weapons manufacturer. While working for Anshin, she discovered a mind-controlling virus that broke containment. To prevent global catastrophe, Loveless was forced to assimilate with the virus, imbuing her with cybernetic powers. This origin story allows Gearbox to explore Anshin's distinct Asian-inspired iconography in the character's design and differentiate her technological prowess from other cast members who rely on more grounded or brute-force applications of tech.

"I wanted to make sure that Loveless’ tech felt a little more refined and directional," said game designer Ryan Bailey. "It was more about putting the physical and technical ends with a little more precision, and making sure she had more mastery over those things. I didn’t want it to feel like she was figuring it out."

Loveless's action skills include Visual Paradox Nexus (VPN), a stealth cloak for undetected movement, and Plague Star, an oversized shuriken that inflicts a new contagion status effect. This disease can spread to other enemies upon the death of an infected target. Skill tree customizations allow for variations such as multiple shurikens or a kusarigama weapon used during VPN. Character design director Nick Thurston expressed excitement for the new melee weapon possibilities, noting the introduction of the kusarigama and a "digital claw" he referred to as the "technocoggie."

A distinctive feature of Loveless is her summonable companion, a metallic, cable-constructed creature resembling a Chinese dragon. This pet can be commanded by the player, but can also act on its own instincts, potentially causing chaos on the battlefield.

A unique mechanic for Loveless involves gaining RAM by landing critical hits or inflicting status effects. As her RAM gauge fills, she receives power boosts, and a full gauge empowers her next melee attack. Gearbox developers incorporated topical humor related to the current cost of RAM into the character's design, with Bailey joking that Loveless "nearly endless" RAM reserves. Some passive skill names also include RAM-related jokes.

For players who enjoyed the assassin playstyle of Zer0, Loveless is positioned as a spiritual successor. Her cybernetic abilities, stealth options, and status effect-focused gameplay are expected to offer a fresh experience when she launches alongside the FL4K and the Last Resort expansion.
