Brandon Sanderson's expansive Cosmere universe, spanning over two decades and more than 20 books, has transitioned from the page to the tabletop with a variety of board games and roleplaying games. These tabletop adaptations allow fans to immerse themselves in the worlds of series like Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive.
Brotherwise Games is the official partner for Cosmere tabletop adaptations and has released several titles. Their "Call to Adventure: The Stormlight Archive" is an engine-building game where players create and develop unique characters by drafting cards, completing quests through rune slab rolls, and balancing morality over three rounds to achieve the most compelling character backstory.
For tabletop roleplaying enthusiasts, the "Cosmere RPG" provides the systems to create characters and adventures within the world of Roshar. Players can choose to become Knights Radiant, Singers, or ordinary soldiers. The game's narrative is driven by player motivations and collaborative storytelling, with available products including the "Stormlight Handbook," the "Stonewalkers Adventure," and a starter set. Brotherwise Games is also developing content for Scadrial and its Allomancers.
"Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game" focuses on characters and events from the first Mistborn book, "The Final Empire." Players, taking on roles like Vin and Kelsier, build decks of cards and utilize Allomantic abilities to complete missions and compete against each other, or engage in an optional cooperative mode against the Lord Ruler. An upcoming expansion will draw from "The Well of Ascension."
"Shards of Creation" is a trick-taking card game that incorporates powers from the Shards of Adonalsium, such as Autonomy, Cultivation, and Honor. The selection of Shards can significantly alter gameplay, offering unique advantages or disadvantages as players form sets for scoring. The game features depictions of the Shard vessels, some appearing for the first time in this title.
Prior to Brotherwise Games' partnership, Crafty Games adapted the Mistborn series. "Mistborn: House War" is a resource management game where players lead factions in the city, aiming to maintain order and earn favor by resolving issues. The game features a twist where either the lowest or highest score can lead to victory, and it can be played in sessions ranging from 90 minutes to three hours. An expansion, "The Siege of Luthadel," extends the game to the second Mistborn novel.
Crafty Games also developed the "Mistborn Adventure Game," the first TTRPG set in the Cosmere, released in 2012. This d6-based system is narrative-driven, incorporating elements like Destiny and Tragedy into character creation for various roles on Scadrial, such as Nobles, Skaa, and Kandra. Several expansions were released for this game, including those focusing on Terris people, Feruchemists, and different eras of the Mistborn saga.
Future releases from Brotherwise Games include an expansion for "Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game" titled "The Well of Ascension," which introduces a cooperative mode. The "Cosmere RPG" will receive Mistborn-themed books allowing players to create characters from both the first and second eras of the series. Additionally, Brotherwise Games is preparing to launch a Kickstarter for "War for Roshar," a strategic board game for The Stormlight Archive. This area-control title will pit up to four players against each other, aligned with Honor or Odium, in a conflict to control Oathgates.
