Brenda Fricker, the acclaimed Irish actress who portrayed the compassionate Central Park Pigeon Lady in the beloved holiday film Home Alone 2, has died at the age of 81. Her passing was confirmed by the BBC.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker achieved significant recognition early in her career, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990 for her performance as Bridget Fagan Brown in the 1989 film My Left Foot. In the movie, she played the mother of Christy Brown, an Irish artist with cerebral palsy who possessed remarkable control over only his left foot, a role that also earned Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar for Best Actor. Fricker made history as the first Irish actress to receive an Academy Award, surpassing notable competitors such as Julia Roberts and Anjelica Huston.

Prior to her Oscar win, Fricker had established a presence in British television, appearing in programs like Coronation Street and portraying Nurse Megan Roach in the BBC medical drama Casualty from 1986. However, it was her role as the unnamed pigeon lady in the 1992 sequel to Home Alone that brought her widespread international fame. The film, which follows Kevin McCallister after he is mistakenly left behind in New York City, became a global phenomenon and remains a popular festive viewing choice.

In Home Alone 2, Fricker's character, initially perceived as frightening by a young Kevin, develops a bond with him. She ultimately aids him in outsmarting the persistent burglars Harry Lyme, played by Joe Pesci, and Marv Murchins, portrayed by Daniel Stern.

Fricker's extensive filmography also includes roles in "So I Married An Axe Murderer" (1993), "Angels In The Outfield" (1994), "A Time To Kill" (1996), and "Veronica Guerin" (2003). Her contributions extended to the stage, with performances at London's Royal National Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre.

Her agent, Phil Belfield, shared that Fricker would be deeply missed, stating, "We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her." He added, "I was honoured to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over."
