Fans of Call of Duty: Black Ops have unearthed a previously unknown cut Zombies mode, more than a decade and a half after the game's initial launch. The discovery was made by YouTuber JTAG, who found the unfinished tower defense variant within a recent PlayStation 4 port of the original game.
Gameplay footage reveals a mode where players would have been able to place turrets on a maze-like map to fend off waves of undead enemies. This perspective appears to be a bird's-eye view, reminiscent of games like Bloons Tower Defense. However, players would also retain the ability to engage enemies directly from a ground-level, first-person perspective, blending traditional Call of Duty combat with strategic defense elements. The mode was clearly in an unfinished state at the time of its discovery.
It is possible that this tower defense concept was shelved in favor of Dead Ops Arcade, a separate, hidden Zombies mode available in the original Black Ops. Dead Ops Arcade, a twin-stick shooter, became a cult favorite and has reappeared in various Call of Duty titles since its introduction. It was accessible through a secret computer terminal in the game's main menu.
Treyarch, the developer, has a history of experimenting with the Zombies formula. The original Zombies mode itself was developed in secret by a small, dedicated team, using repurposed assets from Call of Duty: World at War. Its inclusion in the final game was not guaranteed, but its reception upon presentation to Activision executives led to it becoming a cherished part of the Call of Duty franchise.
The recently discovered tower defense mode likely represents one of many experimental ideas explored by the development team to expand the Zombies experience. While its return seems improbable, the discovery offers a rare glimpse into the game's development process, remaining hidden for so long and only brought to light due to recent ports of the title.
