The upcoming beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to introduce several quality-of-life improvements aimed at addressing issues that have persisted in the series for nearly a decade. Activision has detailed plans to significantly reduce the frequency of the disruptive "update requires restart" message that has often interrupted gameplay.

For approximately the last six years, Call of Duty players have frequently been required to restart the game immediately after launching it to apply new updates and patches. This process can be an annoyance and delays players' ability to jump into matches. Modern Warfare 4's beta aims to lessen the occurrence of this prompt upon game startup. However, players might still encounter the message if an update is released while they are actively playing.

The frequency of this prompt during the beta will vary by platform. PC and PlayStation 5 users are expected to see it least often, potentially only if they are in-game when an update is pushed. Players on Xbox Series X and S, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, may continue to receive prompts to restart. Activision states that this situation is targeted for reduction across all platforms once the full game launches.

Another notable change for the beta is its departure from the unified Call of Duty HQ launcher. In recent years, many Call of Duty titles have been integrated under a single application rather than functioning as independent executables. While titles like Modern Warfare 3 have since been released as standalone games, the Modern Warfare 4 beta will be distributed as a distinct file. This means players will not need the entire Call of Duty HQ application installed to access the beta, which is intended to provide a more streamlined experience.

The Modern Warfare 4 beta is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 21, at 11 a.m. PT on all platforms except the Nintendo Switch 2. Switch 2 players will have access starting the following weekend, August 28. Pre-loading for the beta will commence on August 20 at 9 a.m. PT. Beyond multiplayer content, the beta will also offer a level from Modern Warfare 4's campaign, a first for the franchise's beta offerings.
