Capcom has announced that its recently released title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, has sold over one million copies on its launch day. This sales milestone pushes the total sales for the Onimusha franchise past the 10 million units sold mark, marking a significant return for a series that has not seen a new installment in two decades.
According to a statement from Capcom, a series of marketing initiatives, including multiple demo releases and hands-on exhibitions, contributed to broad user awareness and the game's strong debut. The company indicated that it is actively looking to replicate this success with other dormant intellectual properties from its extensive back catalog. Capcom stated its focus is on "re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently" as part of a strategy to "further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content."
While specific plans were not detailed, the announcement has fueled speculation among fans regarding which long-dormant series might receive a revival. Franchises such as Dino Crisis, Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe, Breath of Fire, and Lost Planet are frequently mentioned by the community as potential candidates for new entries. Although Devil May Cry has also been some years since its last main installment with Devil May Cry 5 in 2019, Capcom appears to distinguish such titles from IPs that have been inactive for much longer periods, like Onimusha.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword continues Capcom's recent streak of successful releases, which includes major franchises like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma. Upcoming titles from the company include Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and Resident Evil Veronica, both slated for release next year, alongside Mega Man: Dual Override. A future project, Okami 2, is reportedly in development at Hideki Kamiya's new studio, Clovers.
Reviews for Onimusha: Way of the Sword have been highly positive, with IGN awarding it a perfect score of 10/10 and describing it as an "incredible action game with an excellent story to match."
