The real-time castle defense game Cataclismo is set to receive a significant expansion titled 'The Old Kingdom,' which will pivot the gameplay to a hex-based strategy boardgame format. This paid DLC, scheduled for release on August 20th, introduces a turn-based strategic layer where players expand their domain from one citadel to another.

In 'The Old Kingdom,' players will manage and expand their economy and military might turn by turn, shoring up supply lines and unlocking new technologies. The mode requires players to dispatch troops between different locations, ensuring crucial reinforcements reach vulnerable points and vital supplies are delivered where needed most. The expansion also features an onslaught of horrors from the Mist, which intensify over time, necessitating the construction of defenses across multiple fortresses.

This new mode draws parallels to a tabletop war game, complete with books and playing pieces, and integrates a turn-based overworld with real-time clashes, similar to the structure seen in the Total War series. Publishers Hooded Horse describe the expansion's objective as reclaiming a lost kingdom by growing the realm's strength and unlocking powerful abilities to achieve ultimate victory.

Cataclismo itself has been praised for its sturdy and satisfying blend of RTS and tower defense mechanics, coupled with tense economic management. The Old Kingdom expansion will be available on PC via Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store.
