CD Projekt Red is aiming to make the upcoming remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt feel contemporary with modern releases, according to executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba. The free update, launching September 29, will go beyond graphical enhancements to address gameplay mechanics and quality-of-life features that have become standard in current titles.

While a previous next-gen update focused heavily on technical aspects to bring the game to newer consoles, this remaster has a broader scope. "We are touching these aspects of the game which weren't touched since we launched it," Kutrzuba stated. "I'm talking about the animation. I'm talking about the gameplay. I'm talking about the quality of life, how you actually play the game."

The development team realized that solely delivering a technical refresh would not be sufficient to make the game feel relevant. Their objective is to ensure that both long-time fans and new players encounter an experience free of dated elements that might suggest the game has aged. "We wanted to make it [comparable] with any other game which is launching these days," Kutrzuba explained.

To achieve this, CDPR has overhauled the animation system, camera work, enemy behavior, and pathfinding, while also introducing numerous small quality-of-life improvements. Changes were implemented wherever the team identified potential sources of frustration, provided they could be made without a complete game rebuild.

Kutrzuba believes the success of these efforts is best measured by the development team's own experience. "It's so easy to get used to these new improvements that it's hard to go back," he said, indicating that the updated systems have become indispensable to their internal playtesting.
