A new free-to-play Roblox game, "The Odyssey: Defy the Gods," has been released as an official tie-in to Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, "The Odyssey." The game allows players to embark on Odysseus' journey across a dynamic ocean, scavenging for supplies and solving puzzles.
According to the game's description, each voyage features a "new ocean," suggesting procedurally generated or dynamically changing environments. Players will face challenges such as storms and whirlpools as they navigate the seas with friends. The game carries an ESRB rating of "T for Teen" due to violence and "fear," aligning with the R-rated nature of the film it promotes.
This initiative follows a trend of Hollywood leveraging user-generated content (UGC) games on platforms like Roblox and Fortnite for marketing. Films such as "Black Adam" and the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon" have previously utilized similar Roblox tie-ins.
Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" is his first film since the critically acclaimed "Oppenheimer" and is highly anticipated. The adaptation of Homer's epic poem features a large ensemble cast, including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, among others. The film is scheduled for release in the coming weeks, with tickets already on sale. Special 70MM IMAX showings are being extended through August due to high demand.
